The Institute of International Education (IIE) is hiring a current student for a summer Thomas S. Johnson internship opportunity. The internships, established in honor of Thomas S. Johnson, Chairman Emeritus of IIE’s Board of Trustees, are designed to expose students to the day-to-day operations of a leading international education and exchange not-for-profit. IIE internships allow students to gain insight into the field of international education, learn about career opportunities and establish a network.Learn more about IIE and our culture .If you are a job seeker in need of an accommodation to navigate our careers site or apply for one of our jobs, please click to learn more.The internship opportunity is with The Language Flagship and Boren Awards programs, both of which focus on providing US students with opportunities to learn languages and culture critical to US national security in overseas locations underrepresented in study abroad. Students from any major in The Language Flagship reach professional-level Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, or Russian, as well as advanced culture skills, while undergraduates. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars (undergraduates) and Fellows (graduate students) agree to work for at least one year in the federal government in positions related to US national security.The Boren-Flagship intern will have the opportunity to work closely with the program team, communications manager, as well as application/selection specialists to learn about the lifecycle of both programs. The intern works with a designated supervisor on assigned projects.Essential Functions:

  • Work closely with the Boren-Flagship team on programmatic projects focused on alumni engagement, such as material creation, website and application improvement, marketing and communications, and data management.
  • Assist in brainstorming of student-facing and alumni engagement activities in consultation with Boren and Flagship team members.
  • Analyzing data and creating materials for distribution on website and to program stakeholders.
  • Represent The Language Flagship and the Boren Awards at virtual events, with potential for in-person local events.

Internship period:

  • Summer internships will take place between late May 2025 and early August 2025.
  • Internships may be 8-10 weeks in duration up to 35 hours per week with core working hours 9am – 5pm EST but subject to flexibility.

Internship Location Options:

  • This internship can be fully remote, or if a candidate is within a commutable distance of our Washington, DC office location, there is an option of a hybrid work schedule that allows interns a combination of in-office work and telework.

Job RequirementsSubmission of a resume and a cover letter are required to be considered for this role.Educational Requirement:

  • A multidisciplinary undergraduate/graduate student matriculated at an accredited college or university.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • An interest in exploring the field of international education and exchange.
  • Good communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Good judgement in handling sensitive information.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office suite, especially Excel and PowerPoint.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with graphic design or content creation a plus.
  • Experience with data management, analysis, and/or data visualization a plus.

Pay Rate: $17.50 per hour.Current beneficiaries of IIE programs are not eligible to work on internships at the same time as their IIE administered scholarship/grant.Work Conditions & Physical Demands:

Essential functions are performed in a general office setting with low noise.
