The Institute of International Education (IIE) is hiring a current student for a summer Thomas S. Johnson internship opportunity. The internships, established in honor of Thomas S. Johnson, Chairman Emeritus of IIE’s Board of Trustees, are designed to expose students to the day-to-day operations of a leading international education and exchange not-for-profit. The IIE Center for Access and Equity (CAE), is among IIE’s Centers of Excellence, under executive leadership of the EVP/CAO and senior leadership of the Center’s Director. It technically resides between the Infrastructure and Higher Education Initiatives departments. The CAE envisions accessible programming and equitable practices in community building that enrich and expand international education, exchange, and opportunity for all. The mission is to provide IIE expertise on access and equity in international education. The CAE supports internal and external stakeholders through projects and activities that generate, curate, and share knowledge and resources, in addition to program administration (e.g., the IIE American Passport Project, IIE Empower Awards).The CAE intern will contribute to the Center’s mission and goals through the development and delivery of projects and activities that support our stakeholders. The intern will interact with IIE team members at all levels and across the organization, as well as engage with partnering organizations and collaborators.Essential Functions:
- Research and reporting: Projects related to exploring or expanding knowledge in subject areas that support ongoing or new opportunities within the Center for Access and Equity and DEIA development for the organization. This may include contributing to our next Resource Guide or other reporting and publications.
- Communications: Projects that include developing, designing, and communicating information to internal and external stakeholders that may take the form of digital campaigns, videos, or other materials/medium.
- Event planning and support: Assist with organizing and implementing any events through the Center for Access and Equity. This may involve IIE and partner-affiliated programs.
Internship period:
- Summer internships will take place between late May 2025 and early August 2025.
- Internships may be 8-10 weeks in duration up to 35 hours per week with core working hours 9am – 5pm EST but subject to flexibility.
Internship Location Options:
- This internship can be fully remote, or if a candidate is within a commutable distance of our Houston, Texas, or Washington, DC office locations, there is an option of a hybrid work schedule that allows interns a combination of in-office work and telework.
Job RequirementsSubmission of a resume and a cover letter are required to be considered for this role.Educational Requirement:
- A multidisciplinary undergraduate/graduate student matriculated at an accredited college or university.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Proven track record of timeliness of delivery and organizational skills.
- Ability to be responsive, flexible, and adaptable to changing priorities.
- Ability to communicate effectively, in particular in hybrid work environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Experience with survey tools (e.g., Verint, Survey Monkey, Qualtrics, etc.) paired with research, literature reviews, and other analytical work delivered in written report format is preferred.
- Experience design tools (e.g., Canva) and/or digital media development (i.e., video creation, social media) is preferred.
Pay Rate: $17.50 per hour.Current beneficiaries of IIE programs are not eligible to work on internships at the same time as their IIE administered scholarship/grant.Work Conditions & Physical Demands:
Essential functions are performed in a general office setting with low noise.
